Daily Movement Prompts, Tuesday, December 6, 2016 edition: Pacing
Quick story–the 19 yr old proudly announced to me last night that he’d been working out because he wanted to build stamina and stop having back pain. He said he jogged in place for an entire TV show then did arm curls on the couch for the next TV show. I asked, “How long have you been doing this routine?” “Just today, so far, but I’m going to do sit-ups and crunches tonight, too!” An hour later he wanted to soak in the hot tub and take ibuprofen because his back was hurting. 30-minutes later, he was lounging on one hip, on the end of the couch, lofting a 25-lb dumbbell over head. I asked him, “How do you think this slouching posture is going to be good for your back, with 25-lbs overhead?!”
Oh, the wild enthusiasm of youth and not really thinking ahead.
Have you ever had wild bursts of “OMG I’m going to do all the workouts!” and then found yourself either injured or exhausted and unable to keep up that first pace? How are you pacing your movement nowadays to balance growth and improvement with avoiding injury or encouraging recovery?
